Labels

(originally written April 23, 2010)

Our identities are created by the opinions and laws
of millions who view our outer design
and place labels like cattle brands upon our foreheads.
It’s like a chemical formula they use to define
into simple and succinct terms for their simple minds to understand
forcing millions of unique compositions
into 5 convenient categories…
never interested in the intricate stories
within…
hair texture, eye color, stature, skin tone…
oh wait… is she a yellow bone,
creole, latina… oh but maybe she is arabic…
am I the only one that’s sick
of having to choose a label that does not quantify
the complexity in my unique design???

cultural connections are the foundations of our sense of self
and that’s as it should be…
except so often labels are used to misrepresent an entire population
it is a crime that causes decimation of any desire to learn
anything beyond the false stereotypes and propaganda…
we rob ourselves of the adventure inside growing to learn another…
labels bring security to the simple minded among us…
and remove our freedom to express…

I am not the curl and thickness of my hair
I am not the ebony diamonds in my eyes…
I am not the soft brown that holds together my insides…
But I am the heart that is speaking now…
I am this message now wrapping its warmth around your soul…
we walk among a sea of faces like a rainbow cast upon the waves
connecting shores with ribbons that dance and flow together…
every face is an opportunity… an opportunity to connect and grow…
take a chance in this seond right here as you stand…
reach over and shake a hand … of some other color that dances with you on God’s rainbow…
all it takes is one “bonjour… hola…. marhaba….or hello.”
shake off the labels… and into a brighter future…
together we will go.
