Wounds and Scars

Wounds paint murals to remember the loss

to honor the fallen, the risen, the … given

The tears burnt offerings at the alter of my

heart’s drumming sacred rhythmic smoke rings

We burn our own flesh as sacrifice

these places left open from love’s free falling water fall

baptism onto the souls,

the loved and lost

I pray the mist over waters carry this ritual of sorrow

and cleanse out the poison of pain

These wounds leave behind engravings, imprints inside

the scar tissue

these memories of love’s presence remind us that

we have loved, have cared, have nourished, have carried,

and the cycle will flow onward

some scars are battle wounds, but most are tattoos, eternal markings like cave wall designs

and pyramid hieroglyphics

These scars are marks of the honor of having known
