The powerful man believes he should have whatever he desires. He thinks that because he yields control over physical wealth, he must also be able to control the human heart. It is hard for him to understand that the human heart is controlled by the will of the Spirit. That spirit is connected to God and God alone has power over the hearts of men and women. The tyrant will remove food from the people, trying to control their behavior. When they work for him he again thinks he has won control over their hearts. But this is not true.
Shakespeare says it in best in “Othello,” “every gnave awaits his turn on the master.” This means that when a leader mistreats the people, they will “await” the opportunity to overthrow him.
You can never control the hearts of men and woman. So stop trying. If you want to seek power that endures, then you must protect the people. Protect their needs, protect their hearts and they will fight for you. Leaders can only endure when the people see a brother in him or her. Lead your people as if you are their brother, not their dominator. Lead your people as if you are their equal, not their superior. Lead with compassion and the people will follow.
