The Old Man’s Lesson

The old man sat at his table and sipped his brandy. The young men approached and said, “Mister, tell us of the women in this city. You know them better than any?”
He paused with movie trailers playing of past loves, of which he had many. They expected a gleam of joy in his eye, but saw more questions than wonder.
He finally spoke, “I never meant at the beginning to have known so many. I would have been pleased to hold one that was all mine through the years. But we lovers let foolish things like pride and fear end what should be eternal “
He passed the bottle of brandy their way and ended by saying, “Be not a connoisseur of many bottles on the shelf. Instead be a lover and protector of the finest there is for your tastes.”
